There has been so much written about food in Paris that there leaves little to be (intelligently) said about its culture, practises, techniques and, of course, where the best places are to dine.

But until Paris’ independent eateries learn to build basic websites, making a booking and finding your way there is often a challenge. Depending on your perspective, this is either an essential part of their charm, or a hassle.

So without wanting to replicate the good work of others, here’s a list (in no particular order) of places we ate at during our recent stint in Paris with their location and contact details as well as links to Street View so you can get there a little more easily.

Chéri Bibi

Downhill to the eastern of side of Sacré Cœur in an unassuming street lies Chéri Bibi. Lots of reviews state that this place is contemporary. It’s not; it’s just not in the traditional Brasserie style. There is a lot to like and that why it seems to be continually full with locals. Make a reservation.

Le Dauphin

131 Avenue Parmentier, 75010

Much has been written on Le Dauphin, and most of it seems to be true. Amazing contemporary dishes in a Rem Koolhaas designed space. What’s not to like? Ignore the advice in the Wallpaper* City Guide and make a reservation in advance. There were more than a couple of groups turned away the evening we dined there.

Le Coupe Chou

This was the only place we ate at without planning ahead after finding it on an afternoon stroll in the Latin Quarter. We were sold first on beautiful ivy clad walls and then the restaurant’s decor, but walked away remembering the superb traditional dishes. While not in any of our guides, it must be in a US version as there were three tables of our North American cousins dining the evening we were there, which never adds to the ambience. Having said that, the food, wine and service were very good and I would return without a moment’s hesitation.

Café de la Nouvelle Mairie

We actually dined twice here on the same day, first for lunch and then promptly made a reservation for dinner. The service was effortless, the food was hearty but refined, and conversation was electric.
